The most notable feature of the Acer Predator 17X is its desktop graphics card, the Nvidia 980 GPU. Toss in an inbuilt overclocking feature, excellent heat management and a price tag of around $2,800, you get one of most powerful yet affordable gaming laptops ever made. While this beast may not offer excellent battery life (happens with every gaming rig), the Predator 17 X is truly a force to be reckoned with.
Acer Predator 17X – Design:
The red-and-black color scheme and the plastic panels on all sides will impress most gamers. The glowing Predator logo on the lid serves as a reminder of the potent gaming weaponry that lies inside. On its surface, the 17 X has a soft touch coating which prevents any smudges or fingerprints. Weighing 10.03 pounds and measuring 16.65 x 12.66 x 1.77-inches, the Predator 17 X can’t be carried around easily.
Acer Predator 17X – Processor, RAM, Graphics, and Storage:
This gaming rig is powered by the Intel Core i7-6820HK CPU (2.7GHz) which is one of the most powerful processors out there. Add in a RAM of 32GHz and you have an unbeatable machine. However, the Predator 17 X’s greatest asset is the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980, a desktop GPU with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM. With such high specs, this laptop makes a mincemeat of any task thrown at it. Furthermore, you can push the performance even higher by simply overclocking the CPU with the help of the Predator Sense application. Speaking of storage, there are two 256GB SSDs in Raid 0 and a 1TB HDD running at 7,200 rpm. The SSDs work at blazing speed, notching a transfer rate of 727 MB/sec.
Acer Predator 17X – Display and Audio:
The full-HD 17.3-inch display is pretty solid when it comes to producing crisp visuals at excellent viewing angles. The anti-glare matte coating prevents the screen from creating unwanted reflections while you’re immersed in gaming. The display also features Nvidia’s G-Sync technology that adjusts the screen’s refresh rate based on the frame rate of your game.
The Predator 17 X’s SoundPound audio system comprises of four speakers and one subwoofer. Every sound effect of the game feels crystal clear without distortions. For those who prefer headphones while gaming, there is an inbuilt digital AMP that boosts the volume.
Acer Predator 17X – Ports and Connectivity:
New Predator 17 X has every port you may ask for. There are 5 USB ports and one of them is a USB Type-C. Other ports include HDMI, Ethernet, DisplayPort, separate mic and headphone jacks and an SD card reader.
Acer Predator 17X – Battery and Software:
Just like any 17-inch gaming laptop, the Predator 17 X suffers from poor battery life. On continuous usage (with Wi-Fi turned ON), the battery lasts for about 3 hours and 13 minutes. Surprisingly, the machine remains cool even after prolonged use thanks to its super-effective heat dissipation system.
The laptop ships in with a clean installation of Windows 10 Home. Acer added a few utilities such as the Dolby Audio and Care Center application, but there are no preloaded apps that can be considered as bloatware.
Acer Predator 17X – Bottom Line:
The Acer Predator 17X has got everything right about it. With powerful hardware and an alluring price tag, it is every hardcore gamer’s dream.
