Alienware 17 R3 – Futuristic Design:

Ok, so you’re thinking about buying a gaming laptop, right? I mean, being able to play the latest Fallout anywhere you want seems to be a really good idea. There’s just one problem: this laptop isn’t a very portable piece. But with the 17 in display and weighing just over 8 pounds, I think you probably aren’t looking for a smallish gaming hardware so it shouldn’t be a problem.

Besides its size, the design still looks imposing as its previous versions and the Alienware glowing on the back does add a really cool looking to this. In fact, a lot of things on this laptop can bright up. Thanks to the Alienware’s technology you can choose colors and brightness for the lights coming from the keyboard and the trackpad. Yes, you read it correctly: the trackpad also glows. So if you want to be noticed in the crowd, especially when lights are out, this is your laptop. And when you don’t want to take too much attention you can just turn all the brightening off.

Display and Sound:

The Alienware 17 R3 comes with a huge 17.3 in, with a 4K resolution of up to 3840 x 2160. It is probably one of the best displays available for gaming laptops out there: it is 15% brighter than Origin’s Eon17-SLX and about 4% brighter than the Acer Predator 17. It is also the screen with the widest color range available among the gaming machines: 52% wider than the MSI GT72 Dominator Pro and 49% wider than the Acer Predator 17 sRGB ranges. With this such a high resolution, brightness and color ranges there’s not much to complain about the screen. Unfortunately, we can’t say the same about its audio. Despite having the Soundblaster EQ software to help, users still struggle to get the Klipsch audio speakers to sound as crisp and clear as they want but it is still not the worst audio quality you’ll ever get.

Alienware 17 R3 – Performance:

The Alienware 17 R3 in its 2016 version features a 6th generation Intel Core i7 processor, with speeds of up to 3.50 GHZ with the Turbo Boost Technology. That, combined with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M graphics card delivers a great gaming experience, although you should expect some lower frame rates at the 4K resolution.

Its GPU is not the best available for gaming laptops, standing behind the graphic cards featured on the GT72 Dominator Pro. But, although its GPU being very powerful, Alienware still provided a great solution for getting to an even higher level: The Alienware’s Graphics Amp. This $300 piece will provide the same graphics processing from desktops to your laptop although not being one more thing to carry if you want to count on this on the road.

If you want a powerful gaming laptop, and you don’t expect to carry this too much, the Alienware 17 R3 is probably the best option for you. It has a great CPU and GPU, a lot of storage along with the 256GB SSD to get things even faster and probably the best display available for mobile gamers.

Its built quality is also really great and the design is gorgeous (if you don’t bother on attracting everyone’s attention). And even not delivering the very best GPU of the market, it still has a better price than its competitors and also provides a simple solution for that: The Graphics Amp. So if you’re looking for a reliable and (kind of) portable gaming machine you should totally consider this piece.
