The Asus’ latest Rog Strix, reasonably priced at $ 1,699 is a gaming beast trying to ascend to the top of the gaming laptop mountain. The Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) will be very attractive, with great design and powerful stuff. The new model is coming with the latest VR-ready graphic card Nvidia GTX 1070 but is betrayed by its short battery life.
Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) – Features:
The newest Nvidia Geforce GTX-1070 with 8GB VRAM can be found inside the Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71). This GPU with the new Pascal architecture that performs 35 percent better than its predecessor the GTX-970. It’s also VR-capable and hits top marks on the StreamVR performance benchmark. While testing, the model does not lag even with the most demanding games like Witcher 3, with an impressive 58fps average framerate.
It features an Intel Core i7-6700HQ processor running at 2.6 GHz, accompanied with 16GB of upgradable ram and an NVMe 256GB PCIe SSD drive with a secondary 1TB HDD, the laptop shows no latency even in very demanding situations.
Battery Life and Temperatures:
Unfortunately, in the case of Strix, all that power comes with a price. And that price is its battery life. The laptop lasts only 2 hours and 39 minutes on battery tests. Well below the 6 hours and 42 minutes’ average. The Strix ROG gets heated fast at 123 degrees Fahrenheit when playing demanding games and that is understandable considering the enormous amount of power the GTX 1070 uses in these situations. The laptop comes with some apps preinstalled which are focused on system maintenance health and gaming optimization.
Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) – Design:
The Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) has an attractive design. It’s matte black in color with brushed plastic details on the top of the lid. On the center of the lid is a rather large logo emblem colored in neon-orange that adds a lot of points to the exterior of the laptop’s design. When the lid is lifted the first thing that stands out are the orange colored WASD keys showing the notebook’s gaming nature.
The keyboard also has a beautiful orange backlighting. There is also another good looking orange ROG logo on the right side. On the right side of the laptop is a pair of USB 3.0 ports, a headset jack, a Kensington lock slot and a two-in-one card reader. On the other side is a USB 3.1 Type-C port a USB 3.0 port, a power jack, a mini DisplayPort and an HDMI 2.0 port. It is considered as a middleweight at 5.8 pounds with a 15.4 x 10.5 x 0.9-inch size.
Screen And Speakers:
The 15.6-inch screen is bright, with vibrant colors and Hd display at 1920 x 1080. It has an anti-glare coating that does an excellent job at reducing reflection. The Strix also features the G-Sync technology which syncs up the graphics card frame rate with the screen’s frame rate resulting in very smooth images. It also features an integrated 720p webcam with a great detail and color accuracy. The audio in Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) needs improving. The bass can barely be heard, and at higher frequencies, the sound comes out a bit harsh.
Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) – Recapitulate:
To recapitulate, the latest Asus ROG Strix (GL50VS-DB71) is an overall great portable gaming laptop; that, unfortunately, has to stay plugged in for extended gaming sessions. Its slim 0.9-inch chassis means that the laptop can easily fit any backpack. The system is powerful enough to play any game that is out right now. It’s VR ready, and that is great considering that VR games numbers have been rapidly increasing lately. It’s a notebook that will surely last for a very long time.
