The Surface Book with Performance Base is Microsoft’s latest entry in the ultra-portable laptop and hybrid tablet markets. It provides laptop capability with additional use as a tablet.
Surface Book with Performance Base – Specifications:
The Surface Book with Performance Base shines in the graphical department. The model has a 2.6-GHz Intel Core i7 6600U CPU paired with powerful NVidia 965M GPU with 2GB, and 1TB PCIe SSD. This is almost double the processing output of the last Surface model. It also eclipses both the latest Apple and HP offerings which only provide the weaker Intel Iris chipsets. This allows it to run powerful professional grade software like AutoCad and Adobe Premiere smoothly. For those looking for a portable light gaming option, it can run newer games like Overwatch at 60 fps and most other games at medium settings.
The Surface Book with Performance Base may seem unusual at first with a 3:2 aspect ratio, but it provides more screen space when editing photos or videos. With its’ 3000 x 2000 display, colors are bright and vibrant with better color display accuracy than the Macbook Pro.
Keyboard and Trackpad:
The Surface Book with Performance Base’s keyboard is nicely spaced and has a deeper click when typing. This gives you better feedback than most laptop keyboards. The trackpad is fast and responsive with none of the sluggishness of the previous model.
Surface Book with Performance Base – Tablet Functionality:
The Surface Book with Performance Base allows you to detach the monitor and use it as a tablet. You can remove the tablet from the keyboard base with the press of a button. The tablet can be used alone or reattached to the keyboard base to watch movies, play games, make presentations or design with the Surface Pen. This functionality coupled with the powerful NVidia graphic chipset makes it especially useful for professional designers.
Weight and Dimensions:
The Surface Book with Performance Base weighs in at 3.34 pounds without the NVidia option and 3.5 lbs with the NVidia graphics upgrade included. It compares favorably with the MacBook Pro’s 3.4 pounds. The dimensions are slightly thicker than most laptops in this class (13 mm thick in the front to 22.8 mm thick in the rear). The tablet weighs 1.5 lbs on its own.
The laptop also provides two USB 3.0 ports, SD Card Reader slot, standard headphone/mic jack and a mini DisplayPort. Unfortunately, there are no USB-C ports.
Surface Book with Performance Base – Battery Life:
The Surface Book with Performance Base has an advertised battery life of 16 hours. Some users have experienced battery life as high as 19 hours. When using the tablet without the keyboard base, battery life is about to 2 to 3 hours.
The Surface Book with Performance Base has a variety of models ranging from $1499.00 for the 8 GB RAM and i5 CPU to $2399.00 for the 16 GB models and i7 CPU.
The Surface Book with Performance Base is a unique hybrid device that provides both laptop and tablet functionality. It manages to perform well in both areas while packing a significant performance increase over other hybrids or laptops with the new NVidia graphics chipset. This is particularly useful laptop for professional graphic designers.
