The MSI GE72 Apache Pro is a gaming laptop with a snappy processor, decent storage, and a fantastic design. In terms of performance, this budget-friendly rig can give its more premium competitors a run for their money. Read on to know each of its features.
MSI GE72 Apache Pro – Design and Performance:
The GE72’s brushed aluminum case does a fine job of repelling the fingerprints and smudges. At 5.95 pounds, it’s not the laptop you will want to carry around frequently. Under its hood, the GE72 features a Core i7-6700HQ processor clocked at 2.6GHz and capable of reaching 3.5GHz using the Turbo Boost feature. The quad-core CPU (6MB cache) is mated to 16GB of DDR4 RAM to churn out enough processing speed to support multitasking. The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M is not the best GPU in the market, but it handles graphics pretty well. Coming to storage, the GE72 has a 128GB SSD and a 1TB SATA Hard Drive, so you won’t have a problem for data storage.
The 17.3-inch full-HD display offers plenty of screens real estate for gaming and watching movies at high resolution. The non-reflective screen offers a decent amount of brightness and color accuracy.
We didn’t find anything wrong with the speakers of the GE72 Apache Pro’s Dynaudio speakers. Whether you’re playing a game, watching a film or listening to music, the audio is undistorted, even at full volume. This machine can easily fill a small hall with crystal clear music. But sadly, you wouldn’t want to use them while traveling since they quickly drain out the battery.
The MSI GE72 Apache Pro efficiently manages the heat even during heavy gaming. You also have the option to give it a cooling boost by manually switch on the fans to dissipate heat from sensitive internals.
MSI GE72 Apache Pro – Keyboard and Touchpad:
The SteelSeries chiclet-style keyboard feels excellent and has adequate room to breathe, so your fingers never trip over the keys while typing or gaming. The backlit keyboard is perfectly complemented by SteelSeries software that opens up endless possibilities to customize displays and colors. The keys have just the right amount of spacing, travel and feel very responsive. The plastic trackpad, which is camouflaged to look as if it’s made of aluminum, feels cheap. But, we didn’t find any problem with its performance. This machine accommodates all the ports you can find on a desktop. There is an SD card reader, two USB 3.0 and one USB 2.0 ports, headphone/mic combo jack, mini DisplayPort, a USB-C port, an Ethernet port, and an HDMI port.
MSI GE72 Apache Pro – Bundled Software:
The MSI GE72 Apache Pro comes bundled with a one-year subscription to the Xsplit Gamecaster, a live streaming and recording software. The GeForce Experience can optimize game video setting and update the GPU dynamically. The Norton antivirus which comes with this machine is practically useless and is more like a virus itself.
Conclusion and Price:
The MSI GE72 Apache Pro has a nice screen, functional keyboard, and a powerful processor, but falls behind its more pricey competitors due to its below-average battery life. However, for $1,299, it is a great bargain. The MSI needs a pat on the back for coming up with a simple yet elegant design that doesn’t feature gaudy LEDs and ugly cooling vents.
